A Portuguese city has a pilot project for green hydrogen injection

The first green hydrogen injection project into the gas network in Portuguese territory – the Green Pipeline Project – was presented this Friday by GGND (Galp Gás Natural Distribuição).

Customers will get a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen
GGND, owner of nine regional gas distribution companies in Portugal and a pioneer in the sector, today presented at Seixal the first project in Portugal to pump green hydrogen into the gas network, the Green Pipeline Project.
As a starting point, this network will cover 80 customers, who will have the opportunity to obtain a blend of natural gas and hydrogen from January 2022, thus taking an important step in Portugal’s energy transition.
The Green Pipeline project has the participation of many partners, from engineering to construction, and brings together contributions from academia, public and private institutions. Green hydrogen, a 100% renewable fuel, will be produced at Seixal Industrial Park, through a partnership between GGND and Portugal’s Gestene.
According to the statement sent to Pplware, in the initial phase of the project, 2% of hydrogen will be injected into the natural gas grid, gradually increasing this percentage to a maximum of 20% over a two-year period.
Green hydrogen is a 100% renewable fuel. It is produced through the electrolysis of water, which consists in the separation of hydrogen and oxygen molecules, using an electrolyzer powered by renewable electricity.
Hydrogen can replace natural gas in the various applications in which it is used today, highlighting its potential for use in industry, transportation or use in buildings, as it contributes significantly to the decarbonization of the fact that only water is released into the atmosphere after hydrogen is used.
